39You search the Scriptures because you suppose that in them you have eternal life. It is these that testify about Me. 40Yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life! “I do not accept glory from men. 42But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me. But if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 41I receive not honor from men - I do not stand in need of you or your testimony. I act neither through self-interest nor vanity. Your salvation can add nothing to me, nor can your destruction injure me: I speak only through my love for your souls, that ye may be saved.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 41I receive not honour … - “I do not say these things because I am desirous of human applause, but to account for the fact that you do not believe on me. The reason is, that you have not the love of God in you.” In this passage we see: 1.That we should not seek for human applause. • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 39-44Verses 39-44 The Jews considered that eternal life was revealed to them in their Scriptures, and that they had it, because they had the word of God in their hands. Jesus urged them to search those Scriptures with more diligence and attention. "Ye do search the Scriptures," and ye do well to do so. They did indeed search the Scriptures, but it was with a view to their own glory. It is possible for men to be very studious in the letter of the Scriptures…Read the comment
