Context of Job 2:3
1Again the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before Adonai, and the satan also arrived among them to present himself before Adonai. 2Adonai said to him, “Where are you coming from?” The satan answered Adonai, “From roaming the earth and from walking on it.” Then Adonai said to the satan, “Have you noticed My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and spurns evil. And he still holds firmly to his integrity, though you incited Me against him to ruin him without any reason.” 4The satan replied to Adonai saying, “Skin for skin! A man will give up all he has for his own life. 5But now, stretch out Your hand and strike his bone and his flesh, and he will certainly curse You to Your face!”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3To destroy him without cause - Thou wishedst me to permit thee to destroy a man whose sins have not called for so heavy a judgment. This seems to be the meaning of this saying. The original word, לבלעו leballeo, signifies to swallow down or devour; and this word St. Peter had no doubt in view in the place quoted on Job 2:7; of the preceding chapter: "Your adversary the devil goeth about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may Devour; , ͅ, seeking whom he…Read the comment
