Context of Isaiah 6:6
4Then the posts of the door trembled at the voice of those who called, and the House was filled with smoke. 5Then I said: “Oy to me! For I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I am dwelling among a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, Adonai-Tzva’ot!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, with a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7He touched my mouth with it and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips. Your iniquity is taken away, and your sins atoned for.” 8Then I heard the voice of Adonai saying: “Whom should I send, and who will go for Us?” So I said, “Hineni. Send me.”

From off the altar - That is, from the altar of burnt-offerings, before the door of the temple, on which the fire that came down at first from heaven ( Leviticus 9:24; 2 Chronicles 7:1;) was perpetually burning. Having a live coal - The Vulgate renders this, A stone.‘ This is, probably, the original meaning of the word; see 1 Kings 19:6. It at first denoted a hot stone which was used to roast meat upon. It may also mean a coal, from its resemblance to such a stone. From off the altar - The altar of burnt-offering. This stood in the court of the priests, in front of the temple…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-13Isaiah’s great vision of the Lord as King on his throne was a turning point in his life. This vision shaped his work as a prophet. Scholars understand the historical setting of this event in two main ways: Some see Isaiah 6 as Isaiah's original call to ministry. This would mean Isaiah 1–5 and 7–12 belong to the time of King Ahaz. Ahaz began to rule after King Uzziah died(Isaiah 6:1). If this is correct, Isaiah’s call did not appear at the beginning of the…Read the comment
