Context of Isaiah 16:5
3‘Give counsel, execute justice. Cast your shadow like night at noonday. Hide the refugees, do not betray the fugitive. 4Let My refugees stay with you. Be for Moab a hiding place from the face of the destroyer. For the extortion is at an end, devastation ceases, oppressors are gone from the land. A throne will be established in mercy, and One will sit on it in truth —in the tent of David— One who seeks justice and is ready for righteousness. 6We have heard of the pride of Moab— very proud is he—of his haughtiness, his arrogance, his insolence, and his dishonest boasting. 7Therefore Moab will wail for Moab— everyone will wail! For the sweet cakes of Kir-hareseth you will moan, utterly stricken.

Commentaries on Isaiah 16:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5In mercy shall the throne be established - May not this refer to the throne of Hezekiah? Here we have the character of such a king as cannot fail to be a blessing to the people. "He sitteth on the throne in truth" - He does not merely profess to be the father and protector of his people: but he is actually such. He is judging. He is not a man of war or blood, who wastes his subjects' lives and treasures in contentions with neighboring nations, in order to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5And in mercy - In benignity; kindness; benevolence. Shall the throne be established - The throne of the king of Judah. That is, he that shall sit upon the throne of David shall be disposed to repay the kindness which is now sought at the hand of Moab, and shall be able to do it. And he shall sit upon it - The king of Israel. In truth - In faithfulness; that is, shall be true and faithful. His character shall be such that he will do justice, and will…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-53-5. Gesenius, Maurer, &c., regard these verses as an address of the fugitive Moabites to the Jews for protection; they translate Is 16:4, "Let mine outcasts of Moab dwell with thee, Judah"; the protection will be refused by the Jews, for the pride of Moab (Is 16:6). Vitringa makes it an additional advice to Moab, besides paying tribute. Give shelter to the Jewish outcasts who take refuge in thy land (Is 16:3, 4); so "mercy" will be shown thee in turn by…Read the comment
