Context of Ezekiel 42:19

17When he measured the north side, it was 500 rods by the measuring rod. 18When he measured the south side, it was 500 rods, with the measuring rod. Then he turned about to the west side and measured 500 rods with the measuring rod. 20So he measured the four sides. It had a wall all around—the length was 500 and the width was 500—to make a distinction between the holy and the profane.

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-20After finishing his tour of the inner courtyard, Ezekiel saw the overall dimensions of the area. The entire complex was square, symbolizing holiness. This shape set it apart from Solomon's Temple and the tabernacle, where only the Most Holy Place was square. The description of the temple ends where it started, mentioning a wall surrounding it (see Ezekiel 40:5). Ezekiel reminds us that the wall's purpose was to separate the holy from the common.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-202. Before the length of an hundred cubits--that is, before "the separate place," which was that length (Eze 41:13). He had before spoken of chambers for the officiating priests on the north and south gates of the inner court (Eze 40:44-46). He now returns to take a more exact view of them.Read the comment
