Context of Ezekiel 19:7

5When she saw that she waited in vain, her hope was lost. So she took another cub and made him a young lion. 6He prowled among the lions. He became a young lion, learned to catch prey, devoured men. He ravaged their widows and laid waste their cities. The land and all who were in it were terrified from his roaring. 8The nations gathered against him on every side from the provinces. They spread their net over him. He was caught in their pit. 9They put him in a cage with hooks and brought him to the king of Babylon. They brought him in hunting nets. So his roar was no longer heard on the mountains of Israel.

The text does not clearly say which one. It is also not clear which towns and cities were destroyed. The prophet may be describing the harmful results of the king’s foolish foreign policy (his decisions about relationships with other nations). These choices brought suffering to the towns and…Read the comment

The Hebrew, literally "widows"; hence widowed palaces (Is 13:22). Vatablus (whom Fairbairn follows) explains it, "He knew (carnally) the widows of those whom he devoured" (Eze 19:6). But thus the metaphor and the literal reality would be blended: the lion being represented as knowing widows. The reality, however, often elsewhere thus breaks…Read the comment
