Context of Ezekiel 12:17
15So they will know that I am Adonai when I scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the countries. 16But I will let a few of them escape the sword, the famine and the pestilence, so they may tell about all their detestable practices among the nations where they go. And they will know that I am Adonai.” The word of Adonai came to me saying: 18“Son of man, eat your bread with quaking and drink your water with trembling and anxiety. 19Say to the people of the land, this is what Adonai says concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with horror, because her land will be stripped of all that is in it, because of the violence of all who live there.

When ministers speak of the ruin coming upon sinners, they must speak as those that know the terrors of the Lord. Afflictions are happy ones, however grievous to flesh and blood, that improve us in the knowledge of God.Read the comment

His shaking showed the fear and anxiety of the people living in Jerusalem and Judah. They would see that destruction was coming and that they could not escape it. Later, the exiles would hear that their homeland had been destroyed. Then they would understand something important. They were not rejected by God. Instead, they were the ones who…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-281-2. eyes to see, and see not, ... ears to hear, and hear not--fulfilling the prophecy of De 29:4, here quoted by Ezekiel (compare Is 6:9; Jr 5:21). Ezekiel needed often to be reminded of the people's perversity, lest he should be discouraged by the little effect produced by his prophecies. Their "not seeing" is the result of perversity, not incapacity. They are wilfully blind. The persons most interested in this prophecy were those dwelling at Jerusalem…Read the comment
