Context of Ezekiel 12:17
15I will send the people away from their homes to other countries. They will have to live among foreign people. Then they will know that I am the Lord. 16But I will save a few of them. War, famine and disease will not kill all of them. When they live among those other nations, they will realize that they have done many disgusting things. And they will know that I am the Lord.’ The Lord gave this message to me: 18‘Son of man, shake with fear while you eat your food or you drink your water. 19Then say to the people of Israel, “This is what the Almighty Lord says about the people who live in Jerusalem and in all the land of Israel: They will be afraid while they eat their food. They will shake with fear when they drink their water. An enemy will destroy their land so that nothing remains in it. This will happen because all the people who live there have done violent things.

Afflictions are happy ones, however grievous to flesh and blood, that improve us in the knowledge of God.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17-20Ezekiel trembled and shook while he ate and drank. This was a sign act, a symbolic action that showed God’s message. His shaking showed the fear and anxiety of the people living in Jerusalem and Judah. They would see that destruction was coming and that they could not escape it. Later, the exiles would hear that their homeland had been destroyed. Then they would understand something important. They were not rejected by God. Instead, they were the ones who…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-281-2. eyes to see, and see not, ... ears to hear, and hear not--fulfilling the prophecy of De 29:4, here quoted by Ezekiel (compare Is 6:9; Jr 5:21). Ezekiel needed often to be reminded of the people's perversity, lest he should be discouraged by the little effect produced by his prophecies. Their "not seeing" is the result of perversity, not incapacity. They are wilfully blind. The persons most interested in this prophecy were those dwelling at Jerusalem…Read the comment
