Context of Deuteronomy 2:30
28You will sell me food for money so that I may eat and give me water for money so that I may drink. Just let me pass through on foot— 29as the sons of Esau dwelling in Seir and the Moabites in Ar did for me—until I cross over the Jordan into the land that Adonai our God is giving to us.’ But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, because Adonai your God stiffened his spirit and hardened his heart, in order to hand him over to you this very day. 31“Adonai said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you—begin to take possession in order to take hold of his land.’ 32“Then Sihon came out against us—he and all his people—to battle at Jahaz.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-37Verses 24-37 God tried his people, by forbidding them to meddle with the rich countries of Moab and Ammon. He gives them possession of the country of the Amorites. If we keep from what God forbids, we shall not lose by our obedience. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof; and he gives it to whom he pleases; but when there is no express direction, none can plead his grant for such proceedings. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate (literally God hardened his spirit and strengthened his heart): Like Pharaoh, Sihon refused to repent and encountered God's wrath (see Exodus 7:13). God knew that showing more grace to these rulers would be of no use. There is mystery in how people harden their own hearts (for example, Exodus 7:13, 22; 8:15) and how God hardens hearts (for example, Exodus 4:21; 7:3; 9:12). What is clear is that God…Read the comment

It extended as far as the Jabbok, having been taken by them from a number of small Canaanitish tribes, namely, the Zamzummins, a…Read the comment
