Context of Deuteronomy 2:30

28Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only let me pass through on my feet; 29as the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us. But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as at this day. 31And Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land. 32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-37Verses 24-37 God tried his people, by forbidding them to meddle with the rich countries of Moab and Ammon. He gives them possession of the country of the Amorites. If we keep from what God forbids, we shall not lose by our obedience. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof; and he gives it to whom he pleases; but when there is no express direction, none can plead his grant for such proceedings. Though God assured the Israelites that the land…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate (literally God hardened his spirit and strengthened his heart): Like Pharaoh, Sihon refused to repent and encountered God's wrath (see Exodus 7:13). God knew that showing more grace to these rulers would be of no use. There is mystery in how people harden their own hearts (for example, Exodus 7:13, 22; 8:15) and how God hardens hearts (for example, Exodus 4:21; 7:3; 9:12). What is clear is that God…Read the comment

The territory of this people had been directly north from that of Moab. It extended as far as the Jabbok, having been taken by them from a number of small Canaanitish tribes, namely, the Zamzummins, a…Read the comment
