Context of Deuteronomy 16:4
2You are to sacrifice the Passover offering to Adonai your God, from the flock and the herd, in the place Adonai chooses to make His Name dwell. 3You are not to eat hametz with it. For seven days you are to eat matzot with it, the bread of affliction—for you came out from the land of Egypt in haste. Do this so that all the days of your life you will remember the day when you came out from the land of Egypt. No hametz should be seen with you in all your territory for seven days, and none of the meat you sacrifice on the evening of the first day may be left overnight until the morning. 5You may not sacrifice the Passover offering within any of your gates that Adonai your God is giving you. 6Rather, at the place Adonai your God chooses to make His Name dwell, there you will sacrifice the Passover offering in the evening at sunset—the time of your coming out from Egypt.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-8Verses 1-8 The cardinal point on which the whole of the prescriptions in this chapter turn, is evidently the same as has been so often insisted on in the previous chapters, namely, the concentration of the religious services of the people round one common sanctuary. The prohibition against observing the great Feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and tabernacle, the three annual epochs in the sacred year of the Jew, at home and in private, is reiterated in a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-8The Passover (Hebrew pesakh) is the feast celebrating God's deliverance of Israel from the tenth plague and from slavery in Egypt (see Exodus 11–12; Leviticus 23:5–8). The exodus was so important in Israel's history that the month of Abib, when it happened, became the start of Israel's yearly calendar (see Exodus 12:2).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-221. Observe the month of Abib--or first-fruits. It comprehended the latter part of our March and the beginning of April. Green ears of the barley, which were then full, were offered as first-fruits, on the second day of the passover. for in the month of Abib the Lord thy God brought thee out of Egypt by night--This statement is apparently at variance with the prohibition (Ex 12:22) as well as with the recorded fact that their departure took place in the…Read the comment
