Context of Daniel 3:20
18Yet even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods, nor worship the golden image that you set up.” 19Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage and the appearance of his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. He ordered the furnace to be heated seven times hotter than it was normally heated and commanded some of the mighty men in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego and to cast them into the furnace of blazing fire. 21So these men, wearing their robes, tunics, hats and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the furnace of blazing fire. 22But because the king’s order was so urgent and the furnace so extremely hot, a raging flame killed those men who carried up Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-30Nebuchadnezzar's obsession with power might have been fueled by the vision in Daniel 2. This obsession led him to build a golden statue and order everyone in his empire to worship it. He did not understand that God cannot be contained in any created object. The three young Hebrews refused to worship the statue as a god. They remained faithful to the Lord, and the Lord saved them from the king's anger.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-30Between the vision of Nebuchadnezzar in the second chapter and that of Daniel in the seventh, four narratives of Daniel's and his friends' personal history are introduced.
