Context of 2 Samuel 7:6
4But it came to pass the same night that the word of Adonai came to Nathan saying: 5“Go, tell My servant David: Thus says Adonai: Are you to build Me a house for Me to dwell in? Since the day that I brought up the children of Israel from Egypt to this day I have not dwelt in a house, but have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle. 7In all My journeying among all the children of Israel, did I ever speak a word to any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ 8So now, thus you shall say to My servant David: Thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 7:6
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Have walked - Implying the frequent moving of the tabernacle, in the times of the Judges, as opposed to a settled resting in one place. The word tent, refers especially to the outward covering of skins, etc.: the tabernacle denotes the framework of beards and bars. Observe the constant reference to the Exodus and to the details as given in the books of Moses.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-17Verses 4-17 Blessings are promised to the family and posterity of David. These promises relate to Solomon, David's immediate successor, and the royal line of Judah. But they also relate to Christ, who is often called David and the Son of David. To him God gave all power in heaven and earth, with authority to execute judgment. He was to build the gospel temple, a house for God's name; the spiritual temple of true believers, to be a habitation of God…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6have not dwelt in a house: Before the temple was built in one location, God lived in the tabernacle. The tabernacle was a portable, tent-like structure. The text here uses language of human experience to describe a truth about God (see study notes on Exodus 29:18; Deuteronomy 8:2). Although God is present everywhere, he chose the tabernacle and later the temple as his "dwelling place" in ancient Israel (see study note on 2 Chronicles 2:5–6; compare Acts…Read the comment
