Context of 2 Samuel 19:2
1The king was shaken. So he went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. As he walked he cried, “My son Absalom! O my son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! Absalom, my son, my son!” Then Joab was told, “Look, the king is weeping and mourning over Absalom!” 3So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the troops, for the troops heard it said that day, “The king is grieving over his son.” 4So the troops entered into the city stealthily that day, like troops who are ashamed after running away in battle.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2The victory - was turned into mourning - Instead of rejoicing that a most unnatural and ruinous rebellion had been quashed, the people mourned over their own success, because they saw their king so immoderately afflicted for the loss of his worthless son.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-82Sa 19:1-8. Joab Causes the King to Cease Mourning. 3. the people gat them by stealth ... to the city--The rumor of the king's disconsolate condition spread a universal and unseasonable gloom.
