Context of 2 Samuel 15:30
28See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness, until word comes from you to inform me.” 29Therefore Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem, and they remained there. Then David continued to go up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he ascended. He had his head covered and was walking barefoot. So all the people with him each covered his head as they went up, weeping as they ascended. 31Then someone told David saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Adonai, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” 32Then David went on until he reached the summit—where God was worshiped—and behold, Hushai the Archite met him with his coat rent and dust on his head.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 30Had his head covered - This was not only the attitude of a mourner, but even of a culprit; they usually had their heads covered when condemned. See the case of Haman. When the king had pronounced his condemnation, they immediately covered his face, and led him out to punishment; Esther 7:8; (note). - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-30Verses 24-30 David is very careful for the safety of the ark. It is right to be more concerned for the church's prosperity than our own; to prefer the success of the gospel above our own wealth, credit, ease, and safety. Observe with what satisfaction and submission David speaks of the Divine disposal. It is our interest, as well as our duty, cheerfully to acquiesce in the will of God, whatever befalls us. Let us see God's hand in all events; and that we…Read the comment

David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet--The same pathway over that mount has been followed ever since that memorable day. had his head covered--with a mourning wrapper.
