Context of 2 Kings 17:19
17and they made their sons and daughters pass through the fire, practiced divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in Adonai’s eyes, to provoke Him. 18So Adonai became very angry with Israel, and banished them from His presence. There was none left but the tribe of Judah alone. Even Judah did not keep the mitzvot of Adonai their God, but followed the customs which Israel had practiced. 20So Adonai spurned all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them and delivered them into the hand of plunderers, until He had cast them out of His sight. 21When He had torn Israel from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat king. Then Jeroboam drew Israel away from following Adonai and made them commit a great sin.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 17:19
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19This verse and the next are parenthetical. Here again, as in 2 Kings 17:13, the writer is led on from his account of the sins and punishment of the Israelites to glance at the similar sins and similar punishment of the Jews. It was the worst reproach which could be urged against any Jewish king, that he “walked in the way of the kings of Israel” 2 Kings 8:18; 2 Kings 16:3; 2 Chronicles 21:6; 2 Chronicles 28:2. The Baal worship is generally the special sin…Read the comment

Those that bring sin into a country or family, bring a plague into it, and will have to answer for all the mischief that follows.
