Context of 1 Kings 11:38
36To his son I will give one tribe so that My servant David may have a lamp every day before Me in Jerusalem, the city that I chose for Myself to put My Name there. 37“So I will take you and you will reign over all that your soul desires—you will be king over Israel. Then it will be, if you obey everything I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My eyes, keeping My statutes and My mitzvot as My servant David did, then I will be with you, and will establish for you a lasting dynasty, as I did for David—I will give Israel to you. 39So I will for this afflict David’s seed, but not for all days.” 40Therefore Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam got up and fled to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt. He remained in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-40Verses 26-40 In telling the reason why God rent the kingdom from the house of Solomon, Ahijah warned Jeroboam to take heed of sinning away his preferment. Yet the house of David must be supported; out of it the Messiah would arise. Solomon sought to kill his successor. Had not he taught others, that whatever devices are in men's hearts, the counsel of the Lord shall stand? Yet he himself thinks to defeat that counsel. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 38a lasting dynasty: A dynasty is a family line of rulers, where a king’s descendants (sons and grandsons) continue to rule after him. Jeroboam had a great opportunity. God promised that if he was faithful and obeyed the Lord, his kingdom would last for a long time. But Jeroboam turned away from God (1 Kings 12:25–33; 14:10–18). He led Israel onto a harmful spiritual path that later brought destruction (2 Kings 17:21–23).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 26-4026-40. Jeroboam--This was an internal enemy of a still more formidable character. He was a young man of talent and energy, who, having been appointed by Solomon superintendent of the engineering works projected around Jerusalem, had risen into public notice, and on being informed by a very significant act of the prophet Ahijah of the royal destiny which, by divine appointment, awaited him, his mind took a new turn.Read the comment
