Context of 1 Kings 11:12
10He had commanded him about this, that he should not go after other gods, yet he did not keep what Adonai had commanded. 11So Adonai said to Solomon: “Since you have done this and did not keep My covenant and My statutes that I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant. Nevertheless, I will not do it in your days for David your father’s sake; but I will tear it away from the hand of your son. 13Yet I will not tear away the whole kingdom, but will give one tribe to your son for My servant David ‘s sake, and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen.” 14Then Adonai raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite, of the royal line in Edom.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 The Lord told Solomon, it is likely by a prophet, what he must expect for his apostacy. Though we have reason to hope that he repented, and found mercy, yet the Holy Ghost did not expressly record it, but left it doubtful, as a warning to others not to sin. The guilt may be taken away, but not the reproach; that will remain. Thus it must remain uncertain to us till the day of judgment, whether or not Solomon was left to suffer the everlasting…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-129-12. the Lord was angry with Solomon--The divine appearance, first at Gibeon [1Ki 3:5], and then at Jerusalem [1Ki 9:2], after the dedication of the temple, with the warnings given him on both occasions [1Ki 3:11-14; 9:3-9], had left Solomon inexcusable; and it was proper and necessary that on one who had been so signally favored with the gifts of Heaven, but who had grossly abused them, a terrible judgment should fall. The divine sentence was announced…Read the comment
