Context of 1 Chronicles 4:42
40They found rich and good pasture, and the land was spacious, quiet, and peaceful. The former inhabitants were Hamites. 41Now those whose names are recorded came during the days of King Hezekiah of Judah. They attacked the encampments of the Hamites, as well as the Meunim who were found there, and utterly wiped them out to this very day. They settled in their place because there was pasture there for their flocks. About 500 of them from the descendants of Simeon, led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, went to Mount Seir 43where they struck down the remaining Amalekites who had escaped, and they live there to this day.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-43The list of men described as leaders of Simeon's wealthy clans (1 Chronicles 4:34–38) leads into the description of Simeon's geographic expansion (4:38–43). The tribe expanded with thirteen family leaders during Hezekiah's time (late 700s BC) in the Gerar area. This might have been part of Hezekiah's military action against Philistine territories (2 Kings 18:8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 31-4331-43. These were their cities unto the reign of David--In consequence of the sloth or cowardice of the Simeonites, some of the cities within their allotted territory were only nominally theirs. They were never taken from the Philistines until David's time, when, the Simeonites having forfeited all claim to them, he assigned them to his own tribe of Judah (1Sa 27:6).Read the comment
