Context of Exodus 12:39
37And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides children. 38And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very many cattle. And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought from Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were driven from Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any food. 40Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the same day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD departed from the land of Egypt.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 37-42Verses 37-42 The children of Israel set forward without delay. A mixed multitude went with them. Some, perhaps, willing to leave their country, laid waste by plagues; others, out of curiosity; perhaps a few out of love to them and their religion. But there were always those among the Israelites who were not Israelites. Thus there are still hypocrites in the church. This great event was 430 years from the promise made to Abraham: see Ga 3:17. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread, &c.--This was to commemorate another circumstance in the departure of the Israelites, who were urged to leave so hurriedly that their dough was unleavened (Ex 12:39), and they had to eat unleavened cakes (De 16:3). The greatest care was always taken by the Jews to free their houses from leaven--the owner searching every corner of his dwelling with a lighted candle. A figurative allusion to this is made (1Co…Read the comment
