Context of Exodus 10:26
24And Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be left behind: let your little ones also go with you. 25And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for of them must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come there. 27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28And Pharaoh said to him, Depart from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.

Commentaries on Exodus 10:26
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26We know not with what we must serve the Lord, etc. - The law was not yet given; the ordinances concerning the different kinds of sacrifices and offerings not known. What kind and what number of animals God should require to be sacrificed, even Moses himself could not as yet tell. He therefore very properly insists on taking the whole of their herds with them, and not leaving even one hoof behind.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-29Verses 21-29 The plague of darkness brought upon Egypt was a dreadful plague. It was darkness which might be felt, so thick were the fogs. It astonished and terrified. It continued three days; six nights in one; so long the most lightsome palaces were dungeons. Now Pharaoh had time to consider, if he would have improved it. Spiritual darkness is spiritual bondage; while Satan blinds men's eyes that they see not, he binds their hands and feet, that they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 25-26Moses would not compromise. He knew the Israelites would not leave any possessions behind. Instead, the Egyptians would give them gifts so they would leave quickly (3:21–22). Moses also emphasized worshiping God. This repeated focus on leaving Egypt for worship shows the main reason for their exodus was so they could become God's people (see study note on 8:26–27).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 24-2624-26. Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the Lord--Terrified by the preternatural darkness, the stubborn king relents, and proposes another compromise--the flocks and herds to be left as hostages for their return. But the crisis is approaching, and Moses insists on every iota of his demand. The cattle would be needed for sacrifice--how many or how few could not be known till their arrival at the scene of religious observance. But the…Read the comment
