Context of 1 Kings 8:19
17And it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 18And the LORD said to David my father, Though it was in thy heart to build an house to my name, thou didst well that it was in thy heart. Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house to my name. 20And the LORD hath performed his word that he spoke, and I have risen in the stead of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 21And I have set there a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them from the land of Egypt.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 8:19
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 Solomon encouraged the priests, who were much astonished at the dark cloud. The dark dispensations of Providence should quicken us in fleeing for refuge to the hope of the gospel. Nothing can more reconcile us to them, than to consider what God has said, and to compare his word and works together. Whatever good we do, we must look on it as the performance of God's promise to us, not of our promises to him.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-21Solomon started with a prayer (1 Kings 8:12–13), then blessed the people and praised God for keeping his promises (8:14–21). Like many praise psalms, Solomon honored God, humbled himself, and spoke of God's great goodness.Read the comment
