Context of 1 Kings 22:36
34And a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of his armour: therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded. 35And the battle increased that day: and the king was held up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at evening: and the blood ran out of the wound into the inside of the chariot. And there went a proclamation throughout the host about the setting of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his own country. 37So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. 38And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood; and they washed his armour; according to the word of the LORD which he spoke.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:36
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36Every man to his city - It appears that the Israelites and Jews maintained the fight the whole of the day; but when at evening the king died, and this was known, there was a proclamation made, probably with the consent of both Syrians and Israelites, that the war was over. Ahab being dead, his subjects did not choose to contend for Ramoth-gilead; so the Israelites went to their own cities, and the Syrians to their own country.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36About the going down of the sun - i. e. as soon as Ahab was dead. The abandonment of the expedition and dispersion of the army on the death of the king is thoroughly Oriental. The Septuagint version reads 1 Kings 22:36-37, “Every man to his city, and every man to his own country, for the king is dead: And they came to Samaria,” etc.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-40Verses 29-40 Ahab basely intended to betray Johoshaphat to danger, that he might secure himself. See what they get that join with wicked men. How can it be expected that he should be true to his friend, who has been false to his God! He had said in compliment to Ahab, I am as thou art, and now he was indeed taken for him. Those that associate with evil-doers, are in danger of sharing in their plagues. By Jehoshaphat's deliverance, God let him know, that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-36An Aramean soldier's random shot fulfilled Micaiah's prophecy about Ahab's death. Ancient armor found in the Near East shows that the arrow likely hit a small unprotected spot between the breastplate and the lower armor's metal pieces. Although badly wounded, Ahab showed courage by staying upright in his chariot during the day's battle before ordering a retreat.Read the comment

The Syrian king, with a view either to put the speediest end to the war, or…Read the comment
