Context of Psalms 119:42
40Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness. 41Let thy mercies also come unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word. So shall I have an answer for him that reproacheth me; for I trust in thy word. 43And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. 44So shall I observe thy law continually for ever and ever.

So the Saviour replied to the suggestions of the tempter almost wholly by passages of Scripture Matthew 4:4, Matthew 4:7, Matthew 4:10; and so, in many cases, the best answer that can be given to reproaches on the subject of religion will be found in the very words of Scripture. A man of little learning, except that which…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 41-48Verses 41-48 Lord, I have by faith thy mercies in view; let me by prayer prevail to obtain them. And when the salvation of the saints is completed, it will plainly appear that it was not in vain to trust in God's word. We need to pray that we may never be afraid or ashamed to own God's truths and ways before men. And the psalmist resolves to keep God's law, in a constant course of obedience, without backsliding. The service of sin is slavery; the service…Read the comment
