Context of 1 Kings 6:11
9So he built the house, and finished it; and he covered the house with beams and planks of cedar. 10And he built the stories against all the house, each five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar. And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying, 12Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I establish my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father. 13And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11The word of the Lord came to Solomon - Some think that this is the same revelation as that mentioned 1 Kings 9:2, etc., which took place after the dedication of the temple: but to me it appears different; it was a word to encourage him while building; to warn him against apostasy, and to assure him of God's continued protection of him and his family, if they continued faithful to the grace which God had given.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-14Verses 11-14 None employ themselves for God, without having his eye upon them. But God plainly let Solomon know that all the charge for building this temple, would neither excuse from obedience to the law of God, nor shelter from his judgments, in case of disobedience.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-13The Lord had an encouraging message for Solomon. Since God appeared to Solomon before (1 Kings 3:5) and after (1 Kings 9:2) this event, a prophet likely delivered this word. The message reminded the king of God’s earlier promise (1 Kings 3:14): If Solomon stayed faithful to God, the temple he was building would become God's eternal home.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 11-1311-13. the word of the Lord came to Solomon--probably by a prophet. It was very seasonable, being designed: first, to encourage him to go on with the building, by confirming anew the promise made to his father David (2Sa 7:12-16); and secondly, to warn him against the pride and presumption of supposing that after the erection of so magnificent a temple, he and his people would always be sure of the presence and favor of God. The condition on which that…Read the comment
