Context of 1 Chronicles 28:2

1And David assembled all the prices of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that served the king by course, and the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, and the rulers over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officers, and the mighty men, even all the mighty men of valour, unto Jerusalem. Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: as for me, it was in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God; and I had made ready for the building. 3But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou art a man of war, and hast shed blood. 4Howbeit the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be prince; and in the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel:

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 28:2

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2David - stood up upon his feet - He was now very old, and chiefly confined to his bed, (see 1 Kings 1:47;); and while he was addressing his son Solomon, he continued on the bed; but when all the principal nobles of his kingdom came before him he received strength to arise and address them, standing on his feet.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2My brethren - David retains the modest phrase of a king not born in the purple, but raised from the ranks of the people (see 1 Samuel 30:23; 2 Samuel 19:12). No later Jewish monarch would have thus addressed his subjects. The footstool of our God - David views the ark as God‘s “footstool,” because he was enthroned above it visibly in the Shechinah, or luminous cloud, present from time to time above the mercy seat and between the cherubim (compare the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2David described the temple as a place where the ark of the Lord’s covenant could rest. The word "rest" signifies the conquest of the land and the establishment of peace (for example, Deuteronomy 12:9). In the wilderness, the ark rested after battles (Numbers 10:35–36). When David brought the ark to Jerusalem, its "rest" became permanent. David expressed this in a psalm of worship: Arise, O LORD, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. Hear me, my brethren, and my people--This was the style of address becoming a constitutional king of Israel (De 17:20; 1Sa 30:23; 2Sa 5:1). I had in mine heart--I proposed, or designed. to build an house of rest--a solid and permanent temple. for the footstool of our God--God seated between the cherubim, at the two extremities of the ark, might be said to be enthroned in His glory, and the coverlet of the ark to be His footstool. and had made ready for…Read the comment
