Context of Isaiah 38:4
2Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto Yhwh, 3And said, Remember now, O Yhwh, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. Then came the word of Yhwh to Isaiah, saying, 5Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith Yhwh, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years. 6And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Then came the word of the Lord - In the parallel place in 2 Kings 20:4, it is said, And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came unto him.‘ That is, the message of God name to Isaiah before he had left Hezekiah; or as soon as he had offered his prayer. This circumstance is omitted by Isaiah on the revision of his narrative which we have before us. But there is no contradiction. In this place it is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-9The story of Hezekiah’s healing connects two events. It links the extension of Hezekiah’s life with Jerusalem’s rescue from the Assyrians. These events happened before Jerusalem was saved. However, the book places them in this order because of their theme, not their time sequence. One main theme is the power of prayer (see Isaiah 37:14–20; 38:2–3). The Lord truly listens. Hezekiah learned to trust God. His father, Ahaz, had refused to trust the Lord…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. In 2Ki 20:4, the quickness of God's answer to the prayer is marked, "afore Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him"; that is, before he had left Hezekiah, or at least when he had just left him, and Hezekiah was in the act of praying after having heard God's message by Isaiah (compare Is 65:24; Psa 32:5; Da 9:21).Read the comment
