Context of Ezekiel 29:6

4But I will put hooks in thy jaws, and I will cause the fish of thy rivers to stick unto thy scales, and I will bring thee up out of the midst of thy rivers, and all the fish of thy rivers shall stick unto thy scales. 5And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven. And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am Yhwh, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. 7When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand. 8Therefore thus saith the Lord Yhwh; Behold, I will bring a sword upon thee, and cut off man and beast out of thee.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 29:6

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6They have been a staff of reed - An inefficient and faithless ally. The Israelites expected assistance from them when Nebuchadnezzar came against Jerusalem; and they made a feint to help them, but retired when Nebuchadnezzar went against them. Thus were the Jews deceived and ultimately ruined, see Ezekiel 29:7.Read the comment

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-7Egypt’s sin is closely connected to Israel. Egypt is described as a staff made of reeds. A reed staff looks strong but breaks easily. Egypt claimed it would support Israel, but it did not have the power or the will to help. It encouraged Israel to rebel against Assyria and Babylon but did not provide real help (compare 2 Kings 18:21). Israel sinned by trusting in this weak support. But Egypt was also guilty. It gave false hope and would face God’s…Read the comment
