Context of Ezekiel 23:23
21Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth. 22Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord Yhwh; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side; The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses. 24And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments. 25And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 23:23
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa - וקוע ושוע פקוד . These names have been thought to designate certain people bordering on the Chaldeans; but no geographer has ever been able to find them out. In our old translations these names were considered appellatives - rulers, mighty men, and tyrants. Others, following the literal import of the words, have translated, visiting, shouting and retreating. Others have applied them to the habits of the Chaldean soldiers. Pekod…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-24Jerusalem’s sin was very great. Because of this, God’s judgment could not be avoided. The same nations that Jerusalem had trusted and depended on would now attack her. Babylon would come with its allies, Pekod, Shoa, and Koa. These tribal names are not well-known. However, they sound like Hebrew words that mean “punishment,” “war cry,” and “shriek” (a loud cry of fear or pain). Judah’s sins were worse than those of her sister kingdom. So her punishment…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. Pekod, &c.--(Jr 50:21). Not a geographical name, but descriptive of Babylon. "Visitation," peculiarly the land of "judgment"; in a double sense: actively, the inflicter of judgment on Judah; passively, as about to be afterwards herself the object of judgment. Shoa ... Koa--"rich ... noble"; descriptive of Babylon in her prosperity, having all the world's wealth and dignity at her disposal. Maurer suggests that, as descriptive appellatives are…Read the comment
