Context of Numbers 26:65
63So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho. 64Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai. For the Lord had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Commentaries on Numbers 26:65
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 63-65Verses 63-65 The execution of the sentence passed on the murmurers, chap. 14:29, is observable. There was not one man numbered now, who was numbered then, but Caleb and Joshua. Here appeared the righteousness of God, and his faithfulness to his threatenings. Especially observe the truth of God, in performing his promise to Caleb and Joshua. Death makes awful havoc of the human species, and causes surprising changes in families and nations; yet all is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 63-65The numbers in this second registration describe a completely new generation of Hebrews. Everyone who had left Egypt had died in the wilderness except Caleb and Joshua. Joshua became the leader of Israel after Moses (27:12–23; see “Joshua” Profile). Caleb also later played an important role in Israel’s history (see “Caleb” Profile). Numbers 26 shows an important change. The earlier generation had lived under God’s judgment because of their unbelief…Read the comment
