Commentaries on Leviticus 11:21

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Which have legs above their feet - This appears to refer to the different kinds of locusts and grasshoppers, which have very remarkable hind legs, long, and with high joints, projecting above their backs, by which they are enabled to spring up from the ground, and leap high and far.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21Legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth - The families of the Saltatoria, of which the common cricket, the common grasshopper, and the migratory locust, may be taken as types.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-22insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet: This phrase excludes creatures that creep or crawl close to the ground (Leviticus 11:27). Leviticus 11:42 says that creatures with many legs, like centipedes, are ceremonially unclean. Locusts and grasshoppers are examples of ceremonially clean insects (see Matthew 3:4).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 21-2221-22. Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet--Nothing short of a scientific description could convey more accurately the nature "of the locust after its kind." They were allowed as lawful food to the Israelites, and they are eaten by the Arabs, who fry them in olive oil. When sprinkled with salt, dried, smoked, and fried, they are said to taste not unlike red herrings.Read the comment
