Context of Genesis 2:13
11The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. 12The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush. 14The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates. 15The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The place fixed upon for Adam to dwell in, was not a palace, but a garden. The better we take up with plain things, and the less we seek things to gratify pride and luxury, the nearer we approach to innocency. Nature is content with a little, and that which is most natural; grace with less; but lust craves every thing, and is content with nothing. No delights can be satisfying to the soul, but those which God himself has provided and appointed…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13Gihon: The exact location is unknown, but some think it could be the Nile River or the Jordan River (as in the Greek version of Jeremiah 2:18; Josephus, Antiquities 1.1.3). Although Cush often refers to ancient Ethiopia, the immediate setting here seems to be a region in Mesopotamia connected with Babylon (see 10:8). Cush…Read the comment
