Context of Deuteronomy 16:14
12Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, so be careful to obey all these decrees. 13“You must observe the Festival of Shelters for seven days at the end of the harvest season, after the grain has been threshed and the grapes have been pressed. This festival will be a happy time of celebrating with your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows from your towns. 15For seven days you must celebrate this festival to honor the Lord your God at the place he chooses, for it is he who blesses you with bountiful harvests and gives you success in all your work. This festival will be a time of great joy for all. 16“Each year every man in Israel must celebrate these three festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Shelters. On each of these occasions, all men must appear before the Lord your God at the place he chooses, but they must not appear before the Lord without a gift for him.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 16:14
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-17The Feast of Tabernacles is called this because God told the Israelites to live for one week in simple shelters made from tree branches. These shelters reminded them of the years they wandered in the wilderness (Leviticus 23:33–43). This feast also celebrated the fall harvest.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1713-17. Thou shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days--(See on Ex 23:14; Le 23:34; Nu 29:12). Various conjectures have been formed to account for the appointment of this feast at the conclusion of the whole harvest. Some imagine that it was designed to remind the Israelites of the time when they had no cornfields to reap but were daily supplied with manna; others think that it suited the convenience of the people better than any other period of…Read the comment
