Context of Amos 1:9
7So I will send down fire on the walls of Gaza, and all its fortresses will be destroyed. 8I will slaughter the people of Ashdod and destroy the king of Ashkelon. Then I will turn to attack Ekron, and the few Philistines still left will be killed,” says the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Lord says: “The people of Tyre have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They broke their treaty of brotherhood with Israel, selling whole villages as slaves to Edom. 10So I will send down fire on the walls of Tyre, and all its fortresses will be destroyed.” 11This is what the Lord says: “The people of Edom have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They chased down their relatives, the Israelites, with swords, showing them no mercy. In their rage, they slashed them continually and were unrelenting in their anger.

Commentaries on Amos 1:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Tyrus - See an ample description of this place, and of its desolation and final ruin, in the notes on Ezekiel 26-28 (note). The brotherly covenant - This possibly refers to the very friendly league made between Solomon and Hiram, king of Tyre, 1 Kings 5:12; but some contend that the brotherly covenant refers to the consanguinity between the Jews and Edomites. The Tyrians, in exercising cruelties upon these, did it, in effect, on the Jews, with whom they…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9The last crowning sin, for which judgment is pronounced on Tyre, is the same as that of Philistia, and probably was enacted in concert with it. In Tyre, there was this aggravation, that it was a violation of a previous treaty and friendship. It was not a covenant only, nor previous friendliness only; but a specific covenant, founded on friendship which they forgat and brake. If they retained the memory of Hiram‘s contact with David and Solomon, it was a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9Tyre and Sidon were the main seaports of Phoenicia. Tyre's crime, like Philistia's (Amos 1:6–8), was selling entire villages of Israelite captives to the Edomites as slaves. This captivity was more painful due to a sense of betrayal (see 2 Samuel 5:11; 1 Kings 5:1, 11; 16:30–31). Tyre was known for its reputation of "anything is for sale." Isaiah described the city as a prostitute selling her goods (Isaiah 23:15–17).Read the comment
