Context of 2 Kings 19:32
30And you who are left in Judah, who have escaped the ravages of the siege, will put roots down in your own soil and will grow up and flourish. 31For a remnant of my people will spread out from Jerusalem, a group of survivors from Mount Zion. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! “And this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: “His armies will not enter Jerusalem. They will not even shoot an arrow at it. They will not march outside its gates with their shields nor build banks of earth against its walls. 33The king will return to his own country by the same road on which he came. He will not enter this city, says the Lord. 34For my own honor and for the sake of my servant David, I will defend this city and protect it.”

Commentaries on 2 Kings 19:32
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 32He shall not, etc. - Here follow the fullest proofs that Jerusalem shall not be taken by the Assyrians. He shall not come into this city; He shall not be able to get so near as to shoot an arrow into it; He shall not be able to bring an army before it, Nor shall he be able to raise any redoubt or mound against it; 5. No; not even an Assyrian shield shall be seen in the country; not even a foraging party shall come near the city.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 32Nor come before it with shield - The “shields” of the Assyrians are very conspicuous in the sculptures, and were of great importance in a siege, since the assailing archers were in most instances defended, as they shot their weapons, by a comrade, who held before himself and his friend a shield of an enormous size. It was made of a framework of wood, filled in with wattling, and perhaps lined with skin; it was rested upon the ground, and it generally…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 All Sennacherib's motions were under the Divine cognizance. God himself undertakes to defend the city; and that person, that place, cannot but be safe, which he undertakes to protect. The invasion of the Assyrians probably had prevented the land from being sown that year. The next is supposed to have been the sabbatical year, but the Lord engaged that the produce of the land should be sufficient for their support during those two years. As…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-34Sennacherib's armies did not enter Jerusalem and instead returned home. In his own account, Sennacherib described capturing and plundering forty-six cities in Judah. He did not mention capturing Jerusalem but noted that he trapped Hezekiah "in Jerusalem … like a bird in a cage." For my own honor—considering Sennacherib's disrespect and arrogance toward God (see 2 Kings 18:25, 28–30; 19:10–13, 21, 27–28)—and for the sake of my servant David, to whom God…Read the comment
