Context of 1 Kings 6:20

18Cedar paneling completely covered the stone walls throughout the Temple, and the paneling was decorated with carvings of gourds and open flowers. 19He prepared the inner sanctuary at the far end of the Temple, where the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant would be placed. This inner sanctuary was 30 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 30 feet high. He overlaid the inside with solid gold. He also overlaid the altar made of cedar. 21Then Solomon overlaid the rest of the Temple’s interior with solid gold, and he made gold chains to protect the entrance to the Most Holy Place. 22So he finished overlaying the entire Temple with gold, including the altar that belonged to the Most Holy Place.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 6:20

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20The fore part - Perhaps “the interior.” And so covered … - Rather, “and he covered the altar (of incense) with cedar.” The altar was doubtless of stone, and was covered with cedar in preparation for the overlaying with gold. This overlaying was not gilding, but the attachment of thin plates of gold, which had to be fastened on with small nails. Such a mode of ornamentation was common in Babylonia, in Assyria, and in Media.Read the comment

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-22The inner sanctuary of the temple, following the tabernacle's design, was covered inside with solid gold. A curtain (2 Chronicles 3:14) and gold chains separated it from the main room. Like the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle, the inner sanctuary was a perfect cube. It held the ark of the covenant of the LORD, symbolizing God's presence. The place of atonement was on top of the ark (Exodus 25:17), where the high priest sprinkled sacrificial blood each…Read the comment
