Context of Psalms 89:41
39You have renounced the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. 40You have broken down all his hedges; You have brought his strongholds to ruin. All who pass by the way plunder him; He is a reproach to his neighbors. 42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. 43You have also turned back the edge of his sword, And have not sustained him in the battle.

Commentaries on Psalms 89:41
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 41All that pass bay the way spoil him - The land is in the condition of a vineyard, the hedge of which is broken down, so that they who pass by may pull the grapes, and dismantle or tear down the vines. The Chaldeans and the Assyrians began the ravage; the Samaritans on the one hand, and the Idumeans on the other, have completed it.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 41All that pass by the way spoil him - The sentiment here is substantially the same as in Psalm 80:12. See the notes at that place. The idea is that of fields or vineyards, where all the fences, the walls, and the hedges are thrown down so that they become like an open common. He is a reproach to his neighbors - An object of ridicule, as if he were forsaken by God; as if east out and despised.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 38-52Verses 38-52 Sometimes it is not easy to reconcile God's providences with his promises, yet we are sure that God's works fulfil his word. When the great Anointed One, Christ himself, was upon the cross, God seemed to have cast him off, yet did not make void his covenant, for that was established for ever. The honour of the house of David was lost. Thrones and crowns are often laid in the dust; but there is a crown of glory reserved for Christ's spiritual…Read the comment

But later the psalmist protests that the Lord seems to have rejected his covenant with David (Psalm 89:38–51; see 2 Samuel 7:8–16).Read the comment
