Context of Numbers 7:8

6So Moses took the carts and the oxen, and gave them to the Levites. 7Two carts and four oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to their service; and four carts and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 9But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, because theirs was the service of the holy things, which they carried on their shoulders. 10Now the leaders offered the dedication offering for the altar when it was anointed; so the leaders offered their offering before the altar.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Four wagons - unto the sons of Merari - Because they had the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets of the tabernacle to carry, Numbers 4:31, Numbers 4:32, therefore they had as many more wagons as the Gershonites.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 To the Gershonites, who had to transport the hangings and coverings of the tabernacle, two wagons are assigned: to the Merarites, who had the charge of the solid parts of the tabernacle, four wagons. The furniture and vessels the Kohathites were to carry on their own shoulders. Compare Numbers 3:25-26, Numbers 3:31, Numbers 3:36-37.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-9The same tribal leaders who helped with the registration in chapter 1 also appear in 7:2–3. The non-Levitical tribes gave the Gershonites and Merarites wagons and oxen to move the heavy parts of the tabernacle and other items (see chapter 4). These vehicles and animals were the first offerings from the Hebrew tribes (7:2). The tribal leaders also presented these practical gifts along with the more elaborate offerings they dedicated (7:10, 12–83).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-96-9. Moses took the wagons and the oxen--The Hebrew word seems to be fairly rendered by the word "wagons." Wheel carriages of some kind are certainly intended; and as they were covered, the best idea we can form of them is, that they bore some resemblance to our covered wagons. That wheel carriages were anciently used in Egypt, and in what is now Asiatic Turkey, is attested, not only by history, but by existing sculptures and paintings. Some of these the…Read the comment
