Context of 1 Kings 22:3
1Now three years passed without war between Syria and Israel. 2Then it came to pass, in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went down to visit the king of Israel. And the king of Israel said to his servants, “Do you know that Ramoth in Gilead is ours, but we hesitate to take it out of the hand of the king of Syria?” 4So he said to Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to fight at Ramoth Gilead?” Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 5Also Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire for the word of the Lord today.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3By the terms of Ahab‘s covenant with Ben-hadad, Ramoth in Gilead ought, long ere this, to have been restored 1 Kings 20:34. Hence, the claim “is ours,” i. e., “it belongs to us of right though the Syrians still hold possession of it.”Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-4Jehoshaphat and Ahab were related because Ahab’s daughter, Athaliah, married Jehoshaphat’s son, Jehoram (2 Kings 8:25–26). It lay within the territories of the Israelitish monarch, and was unjustly alienated; but whether it was one of the cities usurped by the first Ben-hadad, which his son had promised to restore, or was retained for some other reasons, the sacred historian has not mentioned.
