Context of Job 41:22

20Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds. 21Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth. Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it. 23The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable. 24Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.

Commentaries on Job 41:22

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22In his neck remaineth strength - Literally, "strength has its dwelling in his neck." The neck is the seat of strength of most animals; but the head and shoulders must be here meant, as the crocodile has no neck, being shaped nearly like a lizard. And sorrow is turned into joy before him - דאבה תדוץ ולפניו ulephanaiv taduts deabah ; "And destruction exulteth before him." This is as fine an image as can well be conceived. It is in the true spirit of poetry…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22In his neck remaineth strength - That is, strength is “permanently residing” there. This description of strength residing in the neck, agrees well with the crocodile…Read the comment
