And was gathered unto his people - The testimony that this place bears to the immortality of the soul, and to its existence separate from the body, should not be lightly regarded. When he had finished both his blessing and his charge, and so had finished his testimony, he addressed himself to his dying work. He gathered up his feet into the bed, not only as one patiently…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33Jacob died at the age of 147 (47:28), bringing his life of struggle and sorrow to an end. Jacob had always had a strong desire for God's blessing. He had a deep devotion and consistently relied on God no matter what happened. In the end, he died with genuine faith. He learned where true blessings come from. Through his faith, he would be able to pass these blessings on to his sons (Hebrews 11:21).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3333. when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons--It is probable that he was supernaturally strengthened for this last momentous office of the patriarch, and that when the divine afflatus ceased, his exhausted powers giving way, he yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.Read the comment
