- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38Ben-ammi - עמי בן Ben -ammi, the son of my people. Both these names seem to justify the view taken of this subject above, viz., that it was merely to preserve the family that the daughters of Lot made use of the above expedient; and hence we do not find that they ever attempted to repeat it, which, had it been done for any other purpose, they certainly would not have failed to do. On this subject Origen, in his fifth homily on Genesis, has these…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-38Verses 30-38 See the peril of security. Lot, who kept chaste in Sodom, and was a mourner for the wickedness of the place, and a witness against it, when in the mountain, alone, and, as he thought, out of the way of temptation, is shamefully overtaken. Let him that thinks he stands high, and stands firm, take heed lest he fall. See the peril of drunkenness; it is not only a great sin itself, but lets in many sins, which bring a lasting wound and dishonour…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-38The daughters' plan worked. They each became pregnant by their father. From these two sons, born from incest, came two of Israel's long-time enemies: the nations of Moab and Ammon. Their extreme wickedness was partly due to their origins. Both daughters chose descriptive names for their sons. Moab means "from my father" and Ben-ammi means "son of my people." These names subtly hinted at their actions without making people suspicious who were unaware of…Read the comment
