Context of 1 Chronicles 22:8

6Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. 7David said to Solomon: “My son, I had it in my heart to build a house for the Name of the Lord my God. But this word of the Lord came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. 9But you will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon, and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. 10He is the one who will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 22:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Thou hast shed blood abundantly - Heathens, Jews, and Christians, have all agreed that soldiers of any kind should have nothing to do with Divine offices. Shedding of human blood but ill comports with the benevolence of God or the spirit of the Gospel. Aeneas, overpowered by his enemies, while fighting for his parents, his family, and his country, finding farther resistance hopeless, endeavors to carry off his aged father, his wife, young son, and his…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The word of the Lord came to me … - Not by Nathan 1 Chronicles 17:4-15, but on some other occasion 1 Chronicles 28:3. On the bloody character of David‘s wars, see 2 Samuel 8:2, 2 Samuel 8:5; 2 Samuel 10:18; 2 Samuel 12:31; and 1 Kings 11:16.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-16Verses 6-16 David gives Solomon the reason why he should build the temple. Because God named him. Nothing is more powerful to engage us in any service for God, than to know that we are appointed thereto. Because he would have leisure and opportunity to do it. He should have peace and quietness. Where God gives rest, he expects work. Because God had promised to establish his kingdom. God's gracious promises should quicken and strengthen our religious…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8God did not allow David to build the temple because he had shed much blood (see 1 Kings 5:3–4). David's wars were not wrong, and God had blessed and supported them. However, the bloodshed and deaths in battle made David ceremonially unclean (see 1 Chronicles 28:3; compare Genesis 4:10–12; Leviticus 17:3–4; Deuteronomy 21:1–9; Matthew 27:24–25). Therefore, he could not build a holy sanctuary for the Lord.Read the comment
