Context of Song of Songs 2:8
6His left hand caresses my head, and his right hand stimulates me. 7I adjure you, O maidens of Jerusalem, by the gazelles and by the young does of the open fields: Do not awaken or arouse love until it pleases! Listen! My lover is approaching! Look! Here he comes, leaping over the mountains, bounding over the hills! 9My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look! There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the window, peering through the lattice. 10My lover spoke to me, saying: “Arise, my darling; My beautiful one, come away with me!

Commentaries on Song of Songs 2:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Behold, he cometh leaping - This appears to be highly characteristic of the gambols of the shepherds, and points out the ecstasy with which those who were enamoured ran to their mates. It is supposed that the second day's eclogue begins at this verse. The author of what was then called A New Translation of Solomon's Song, observes, The bride relates how the bridegroom, attended by his companions, had come under her window, and called upon her to come…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5-8Verses 5-8 This section is made by the Targumist and other Jewish interpreters to adumbrate the condition of Israel in the wilderness; by some Christian expositors, that of the Gentile Church on her first conversion. Genesis 25:13; Psalm 120:5. The word itself signifies “dark” or “black.” Possibly “tents of Kedar” stand here poetically for shepherds‘ tents in general Isaiah 60:7. Job 20:9; Job 28:7, and indicates in the latter place the piercing glance of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 The church pleases herself with thoughts of further communion with Christ. None besides can speak to the heart. She sees him come. This may be applied to the prospect the Old Testament saints had of Christ's coming in the flesh. He comes as pleased with his own undertaking. He comes speedily. Even when Christ seems to forsake, it is but for a moment; he will soon return with everlasting loving-kindness. The saints of old saw him, appearing…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-10The man eagerly wants to be with the woman. He finally reaches his lover's home and takes her to the romantic countryside during the fresh spring. The woman compares the man to a gazelle, a fast and graceful animal that easily overcomes obstacles to reach its goal.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. voice--an exclamation of joyful surprise, evidently after a long silence. The restlessness of sin and fickleness in her had disturbed His rest with her, which she had professed not to wish disturbed "till He should please." He left her, but in sovereign grace unexpectedly heralds His return. She awakes, and at once recognizes His voice (1Sa 3:9, 10; Joh 10:4); her sleep is not so sinfully deep as in So 5:2. leaping--bounding, as the roe does, over the…Read the comment
