Context of Numbers 7:89
87All the animals for the burnt offering were 12 young bulls, 12 rams, 12 male lambs in their first year, with their grain offering, and 12 male goats for a purification offering. 88All the animals for the sacrifice for the peace offering were 24 young bulls, 60 rams, 60 male goats, and 60 lambs in their first year. These were the dedication offerings for the altar after it was anointed. Now when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the atonement lid that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim. Thus he spoke to him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 89To speak with him - To confer with God, and to receive farther discoveries of his will. He heard the voice of one speaking unto him - Though Moses saw no similitude, but only heard a voice, yet he had the fullest proof of the presence as well as of the being of the Almighty. In this way God chose to manifest himself during that dispensation, till the fullness of the time came, in which the Word was made flesh, and Dwelt Among Us. No man hath seen God at…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 89With him - i. e. as marginal, “with God,” not (as some) with himself. He heard the voice of one speaking - Rather, he heard the voice speaking, or conversing. The effect was as though Moses was audibly addressed by another person: how this effect was produced we are not told. Thus was the promise of Exodus 25:20-22 fulfilled; and that as an immediate response on the part of God to the cheerful readiness with which the tribes had made their offerings, and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-89Verses 10-89 The princes and great men were most forward in the service of God. Here is an example to those in authority, and of the highest rank; they ought to use their honour and power, their estate and interest, to promote religion and the service of God in the places where they live. Though it was a time of joy and rejoicing, yet still, in the midst of their sacrifices, we find a sin-offering. As, in our best services, we are conscious that there is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 89After dedicating the Tent of Meeting (the tabernacle) and setting it apart as holy, it became the center of divine revelation. There, Moses spoke with God, who revealed his will and presence (Leviticus 16:2, 13–17). This communication came from the ark of the covenant. It was specifically between the two cherubim above the ark's cover, also called "the mercy seat" (compare Exodus 25:17–22). For the Israelites, this was the special place for atonement…Read the comment
