Context of Leviticus 13:54
52He must burn the garment or the warp or the woof, whether wool or linen, or any article of leather which has the infection in it. Because it is a malignant disease it must be burned up in the fire. 53But if the priest examines it and the infection has not spread in the garment or in the warp or in the woof or in any article of leather, the priest is to command that they wash whatever has the infection and quarantine it for another seven days. 55The priest must then examine it after the infection has been washed out, and if the infection has not changed its appearance even though the infection has not spread, it is unclean. You must burn it up in the fire. It is a fungus, whether on the back side or front side of the article. 56But if the priest has examined it and the infection has faded after it has been washed, he is to tear it out of the garment or the leather or the warp or the woof.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 47-59Verses 47-59 The garment suspected to be tainted with leprosy was not to be burned immediately. If, upon search, it was found that there was a leprous spot, it must be burned, or at least that part of it. If it proved to be free, it must be washed, and then might be used. This also sets forth the great evil there is in sin. It not only defiles the sinner's conscience, but it brings a stain upon all he has and all that he does. And those who make their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 47-59In Israel, the rainy season lasts from mid-October through March, bringing humid and cool weather. Mildew thrives during this period. Its spores can cause severe allergic reactions, creating a health issue. The rules for mildew in clothing were like those for infections in people. If the mildew spread, it was serious. If they could stop, wash, or cut it out, they could save the garment. This process was also similar to treating rot and mold in buildings…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 47-5947-59. The garment ... that the ... leprosy is in--It is well known that infectious diseases, such as scarlet fever, measles, the plague, are latently imbibed and carried by the clothes. But the language of this passage clearly indicates a disease to which clothes themselves were subject, and which was followed by effects on them analogous to those which malignant leprosy produces on the human body--for similar regulations were made for the rigid…Read the comment
