Context of Joshua 18:2

1The entire Israelite community assembled at Shiloh and there they set up the tent of meeting. Though they had subdued the land, seven Israelite tribes had not been assigned their allotted land. 3So Joshua said to the Israelites: “How long do you intend to put off occupying the land the Lord God of your ancestors has given you? 4Pick three men from each tribe. I will send them out to walk through the land and make a map of it for me.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Two tribes and a half had already received their portions on the east of Jordan; Judah, Ephraim, and the remaining half of Manasseh had also been provided for Joshua 1517. • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 2-10Verses 2-10 After a year or more, Joshua blamed their slackness, and told them how to proceed. How long shall it be thus with us? How long shall we thus stand in our own light, and forsake our own mercies for lying vanities? Joshua stirs the Israelites up to take…Read the comment

The tribal allowances made the covenant of the Israelites with God real. It showed the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Since God owned the land, giving it to the tribes was a gift. God gave them the land to live in and guided its distribution. In these lists of tribal allowances, the author describes some borders…Read the comment

Various causes led to a long delay in resuming it. The satisfaction of the people with their change to so pleasant and fertile a district, their…Read the comment
