Context of Joshua 10:1
Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua captured Ai and annihilated it and its king as he did Jericho and its king. He also heard how the people of Gibeon made peace with Israel and lived among them. 2All Jerusalem was terrified because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal cities. It was larger than Ai and all its men were warriors. 3So King Adoni-Zedek of Jerusalem sent this message to King Hoham of Hebron, King Piram of Jarmuth, King Japhia of Lachish, and King Debir of Eglon:

Commentaries on Joshua 10:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Adoni-zedec - This name signifies the Lord of justice or righteousness; and it has been conjectured that the Canaanitish kings assumed this name in imitation of that of the ancient patriarchal king of this city, Melchizedek, whose name signifies king of righteousness, or my righteous king: a supposition that is not improbable, when the celebrity of Melchizedek is considered. Jerusalem - ירושלם Yerushalam . This word has been variously explained; if it be…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1Adoni-zedek means "master of righteousness" or "my master is righteous." An earlier king of Jerusalem was named Melchizedek, which means "king of righteousness" or "my king is righteous." He had been a priest of God Most High and a friend of Abraham (Genesis 14:18–20). However, Adoni-zedek was not a friend to Joshua or a believer in the Lord.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-51. Adoni-zedek--"lord of righteousness"--nearly synonymous with Melchizedek, "king of righteousness." These names were common titles of the Jebusite kings. Jerusalem--The original name, "Salem" (Ge 14:18; Psa 76:2), was superseded by that here given, which signifies "a peaceful possession," or "a vision of peace," in allusion, as some think, to the strikingly symbolic scene (Ge 22:14) represented on the mount whereon that city was afterwards built…Read the comment
