Context of Genesis 8:14

12He waited another seven days and sent the dove out again, but it did not return to him this time. 13In Noah’s six hundred and first year, in the first day of the first month, the waters had dried up from the earth, and Noah removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. And by the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was dry. 15Then God spoke to Noah and said, 16“Come out of the ark, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day - From this it appears that Noah was in the ark a complete solar year, or three hundred and sixty-five days; for he entered the ark the 17th day of the second month, in the six hundredth year of his life, Genesis 7:11, Genesis 7:13, and continued in it till the 27th day of the second month, in the six hundredth and first year of his life, as we see above. The months of the ancient Hebrews were lunar…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 God consults our benefit, rather than our desires; he knows what is good for us better than we do for ourselves, and how long it is fit our restraints should continue, and desired mercies should be delayed. We would go out of the ark before the ground is dried; and perhaps, if the door, is shut, are ready to thrust off the covering, and to climb up some other way; but God's time of showing mercy is the best time. As Noah had a command to go…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14the earth was fully dry: This word for dry land is often used with the sea to show God’s rule over both land and sea (see 1:9–10; Exodus 14:22, 29; Psalm 95:5; Jonah 1:9).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1413-14. Noah removed the covering of the ark--probably only as much of it as would afford him a prospect of the earth around. Yet for about two months he never stirred from his appointed abode till he had received the express permission of God. We should watch the leading of Providence to direct us in every step of the journey of life.Read the comment
