Context of Genesis 50:26
24Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to you and lead you up from this land to the land he swore on oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” 25Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He said, “God will surely come to you. Then you must carry my bones up from this place.” So Joseph died at the age of 110. After they embalmed him, his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old - שנים ועשר מאה בן ben meah vaeser shanim ; literally, the son of a hundred and ten years. Here the period of time he lived is personified, all the years of which it was composed being represented as a nurse or father, feeding, nourishing, and supporting him to the end. This figure, which is termed by rhetoricians prosopopaeia, is very frequent in Scripture; and by this virtues, vices, forms, attributes, and…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-26Verses 22-26 Joseph having honoured his father, his days were long in the land, which, for the present, God had given him. We must comfort others with the same comforts with which we have been comforted of God, and encourage them to rest on the promises which are our support. For a confession of his own faith, and a confirmation of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26Joseph’s death signified the end of his generation (see study notes on 25:7–8; 35:1–29) and of the patriarchal age. From this point forward, God dealt with Israel as a nation. • Joseph’s body stayed in Egypt as a symbol of hope for slaves awaiting the promised land (see Exodus 13:19; Hebrews 11:39–40). They eventually buried him in Shechem (see Joshua 24:32), where Jacob had originally sent him (Genesis 37:13).Read the comment
